About trip
Loughrigg Fell in the Lake District’s Central Fells is an easy fell walk that can be enjoyed from all directions. There’s a good approach up Loughrigg Fell from Grasmere and Rydal Water along the Loughrigg Terrace. You can also approach this popular Wainwright from Skelwith Bridge, usually via Loughrigg Tarn., or even Elterwater. The map below shows the route up Loughrigg Fell from Ambleside, though you can easily join the walk from Grasmere, Rydal, Skelwith Bridge or Clappersgate. There’s a car park at White Moss Common between Grasmere and Rydal Water that also makes an ideal starting point for any ascent of Loughrigg Fell.
Setting off from Ambleside, you’re soon on the open fellside with a good track to follow all the way to the summit. You often find that the lowliest hills have the best views, and Loughrigg Fell is no exception. With it’s central location, the view reads like a Who’s Who of Lakeland’s finest fells as well as views over Grasmere, Winderemere and Rydal Water. The return leg’s not too shabby either, as you descend via Loughrigg Terrace and the southern shore of Rydal Water and back to Ambleside.
You can also return via the Coffin Route from Rydal Water rather than following the country lane to Ambleside.
