About trip
Route from Dolgarrog, up the valley of the original dam disaster flood. First, the earth bank dam of the Coedty Reservoir which was the last line of defence and which ultimately failed. Then onto Llyn Eigiau, the main dam (once 35 feet high and 3/4 of a mile long) which failed in 1925 releasing over 70 billion gallons of water and killing 16 people. The original contractor quit because he wasn't happy with the corners being cut. On close inspection of the dam today reveals that the foundations were insufficient and there are large chunks of unmixed concrete.
