About trip

The boundaries of Clun Forest are rather fluid, with the name meaning different things to different people. Roughly speaking, it’s the remote, hilly and mostly unforested area of Shropshire which extends from Clun to the Welsh border. To the north, the edge of Clun Forest is defined by the Kerry Ridgeway (Cefnffordd Ceri), an ancient track first tramped by Bronze Age traders 4000 years ago, and later by the cattle drovers, coming from Montgomeryshire to the English markets. To the south, the River Teme (Afon Tefeidiad) provides a suitable border. Much of Clun Forest actually belonged to Montgomeryshire until 1537, when it was transferred to Shropshire. Even today, it often feels more Welsh than English, whether you are romping over remote hilltops, admiring stunning views or listening to the lilting accents of the local people. Clun itself is a charming place, and the views from the castle are sufficient to tempt even the most reluctant walker into the surrounding hills. White Horse, Clun – tel. (01588) 640305
