About trip
Clun will never be a major tourist attraction, which is great because it means that visitors are unlikely to bump into Judith Chalmers or Anthea Turner filming Wish You Were Here. While they are tempting the tourists to Tenerife, Tuscany or Toronto, why not wander round what the poet AE Housman described in A Shropshire Lad as “one of the quietest places under the sun.” It hasn’t always been quiet, though. During the Iron Ages, the Olde English equivalent of Barrett Homes moved in to create a hill fort on Bury Ditches – handy for keeping an eye on the Welsh just across the border. And then the Fitzalan family did their bit by creating a Norman fort in the village; it’s now one of the closest English Heritage sites to Wales. Follow this route and discover what Judith and Anthea are missing. The White Horse Inn – tel. (01588) 640305; The Sun Inn – tel. (01588) 640559 (both in Clun)
