About trip

Presteigne lies just inside old Radnorshire, now Powys, where Wales extends its boundary with almost a pointed finger shape towards English Herefordshire. With the dual name of Llanandras it strives for Welsh identity, but somehow it is more ‘English’ than most border towns with its proud Georgian houses and decorated Norman church. The Welsh border ‘finger’ has obviously been dictated by the meeting of two rivers, the Lugg and the Hindwell Brook as the map will reveal. This route heads through the attractive countryside to the north and west. It makes a scenic journey via fields and lanes to Norton and, beyond, enters a picturesque valley surrounded by green hills with fine views of the way so far. Turning west, you meet Offa’s Dyke path in one of its best preserved stretches when it crosses Hawthorn Hill and then descends to the Lugg Valley which gives a lower or higher alternative finish.
