About trip

One of the great things about a day out on a mountain bike is that, if you’re going to do it legally, it will probably take you to hills that you wouldn’t normally visit; and this route is no exception. Using the long distance path of the Taff Trail, it climbs steadily out of the vibrant little village of Talybont-on-Usk to Pen Rhiw-calch; a slender limestone ridge that is seldom walked yet offers some of the most interesting views in the entire National Park. From the broad stony track that runs along its spine, you can gaze down to the narrow winding band of the Caerfanell River, look out across the wide expanse of the Talybont Reservoir and trace the airy ridgeline that links Carn Pica with Craig y Fan Ddu and the main Beacons massif. The rounded profiles of the hills make this a route that, despite the height gained, is never too steep to ride. So fasten those skid-lids and let’s get going!
