About trip

Castles, Railways and Rivers, an 10.3 mile circular walk in West Moray

A Route Description

From Logie Steading:

  1. Take the way marked riverside path upstream towards Randolph’s Leap.

  2. At Logie Bridge head up the River Divie on the east bank for a short way then bear left over steep wooded ground to gain a ridge opposite the  Logie Steading driveway entrance from the road.

  3. Go up the wooded ridge (East) on a trod path to where it flattens out with a telegraph pole on the right.

  4. Follow the trod path SE until you meet a vehicle track, which will take you up hill in a southerlydirection.

  5. The track will flatten out and then joins a metalled driveway. Follow the driveway south and downhill

for a mile until you get to a series of ponds on the left that go around a conical hill that has the ruin of Dunphail Castle on it.

  6. There are 3 options from here, all ending at the same place (the GPX track follows option b).

    1. Follow the low level path near the ponds that goes around the conical hill.

    2. Follow the high level path to the left of the ravine that goes around the rim of the ravine.

    3. Continue along the driveway a short distance to where the ravine comes out on the other side of the conical hill.

  7. Where the ravine meets up with the driveway, take a left turn onto a farm track behind the houses. Go alongside a small enclosed field on the right, then where the track meets another, turn right downhill, then left to pass in front of Dunphail house and rejoin the metaled driveway.

  8. Keep going SE down the driveway for a couple of hundred metres until you come to a junction with a vehicle track on the left which is just after a stone bridge with a Latin plaque on it. At this point you can either do the short loop over the footbridges on the Divie and Dorback as shown on the GPX track or follow the track (E) up to where it meets the main A940 at Poldow Lodge.

  9. Cross the main road and walk up the road (NW) on the right verge for a few metres until you can see a large stone bridge to the right that carries the Dava Way over the Sluggan Burn. Go under the bridge on the left hand side walkway, then immediately left up the railway embankment to gain the Dava Way.

  10. Head NW on the Dava Way to the Dunphail Breathing Place where there is a picnic area.

  11. From the picnic area continue north along the Dava Way for about 2 miles until you come to a galvanised two way self closing gate. There are usually cattle beyond this gate. Go through the gate and where the embankment merges with the field slope, go left through the field and aim for the gates that lead up to the Muir of Logie Farm. Be very careful if you have a dog, especially if there are cows with their calves in the field.

  12. Go through the farm and follow the vehicle tracks until you come to a ’T’ junction. Turn left and go along the track until you come out on the main A940 road opposite the Logie House North Lodge. Cross the road to the lodge.

  13. From the lodge head north towards the main road for a short way, then left onto a path that passes a new house under construction (2015). Keep left of the construction works and pick up the path that swings round to the SW and follow this peaty path to the south of Honey Howe until a forestry track is reached.

  14. Turn right onto the forestry track for a short way until you see the first Logie Steading way marker. Follow the way marked track left, which takes you along forestry tracks and paths to the River Findhorn and eventually Logie Steading, the finish of the walk.
