About trip
Lanyon Quoit Grid Ref SW431 337 marked on the OS Mapping - one of the best examples of an old Chambered Tomb in the UK From here walk back up the road towards Lanyon Farm (see map) and take the track on your right 250m before the farm which joins the footpath heading to the old mine workings at Ding Dong and its prominent engine house (Grid Ref SW 436 346). Now using the map head in a northerly direction across the moor on the route of the black dotted line path to reach the Nine Maiden Stone Circle (marked on the map Grid Reference SW 434 351) Seven stones from the circle remain in this desolate spot. Continue on the path as marked on the map heading downhill and bearing left to meet a crossing of paths with a large recumbent stone with a small cross marked at one end. This is the Four Parish Stone Grid Reference SW 430 354. Remember this spot as you will return here to head on later to descend towards the coast and Zennor. Turn left at the Parish Stone following the green dotted line footpath which becomes a track. After a few minutes look into the field on your right to find the Men Scryfa Stone (Cornish for The Stone of Writing) a granite pillar commemorating the death of an Iron Age Warrior in a battle here Grid Reference SW 427 353 and marked on the map. Return to the path and continue west along the track for another five minutes and just before the group of derelict buildings on your right look for a granite stile on your left. The path from here marked on the map leads you to the Men an Tol SW428 349 and marked on the map. The four stones here include the iconic circular stone children and ancestors bones were passed through the hole for everything from curing the sick to invoking fertility. Return now to the track, heading right and back the way you came to the Four Parish Stone Grid Reference SW 430 354. You now take the path on your left heading towards the coast through the valley between Carn Galver and Watch Croft a stunning walk. Follow the green footpath route on the map to emerge at Rosemergy and the car park for the Carn Galver Mine System its old buildings well worth exploring. To return to Zennor you can now either turn right to walk along the coast road (B3306) or use the footpaths marked on the map running from Rosemergy via Bosigran Farm to rejoin the road into Treen where the Gurnards Head Hotel can provide refreshments. The footpath on the corner of the road outside the pub cuts the corner off the road as marked on the map and having rejoined the coast road through Boswednack you can then take the well walked inland path again marked on the map with a green dotted line running just south of Poniou all the way to Zennor. The total mileage on the above suggested route is around 5 miles from Lanyon Quoit to the Coast Road at Rosemergy including the walk linking the stones and from the coast road another 3 miles back to Zennor along the inland path or 4 miles on the coast path. Refreshments Other than at Treen just before Zennor there are no refreshments or indeed much habitation at all so take water and food with you. In Treen village is the Gurnards Head Hotel 01736 796 928. In Zennor village on your return is The Tinners Arms and The Backpackers Cafe.
