About trip

  • Circular walk: 3.7 miles
  • what3words address for parking: ///harshest.stormy.written

The what3words address takes you to St Justinian’s where there’s a parking area on the left beside the road that’s free. There’s another similar area about 40 yards further on. If there is no free space here, there’s a gate leading to a field that’s used for parking (also by the what3words address). I think the parking in the field costs £3.

The boat takes you over to Ramsey from the old lifeboat station. You can book online or there is place in St David’s if you prefer to talk to a human being.

Ramsey Island is a RSPB reserve. It was bought in 1992 and they then cleared the island of rats and mice to allow the bird populations to recover. The staff meet the boat at the quay when you get to the island to give a short talk. There are paper maps available to guide your walk. You need to keep to the paths to avoid disturbing nesting birds. The paths are easy to follow and, frankly, the last thing you need is a gpx file.  However, I’ve included it here because it’s a lovely, peaceful place to be and there’s always something else to interest you, especially if you are interested in birds. We saw a peregrine falcon, choughs, guillemots, various gulls and smaller birds such as wheatear and meadow pippets. If you’re lucky you may see porpoises, and seals are regular visitors.

There is a small shop that is open briefly when the boat lands, and then for an hour before it leaves, where you can get something to drink and a snack. There are also toilets  here.

We had a lovely day and it was well worth the boat fare.
