About trip
A dramatic and beautiful circular route which takes in the best that west Cornwall has to offer. Leaving eastwards from Penzance station on the A30 it quickly turns to the quieter B3311 St Ives road as far as Gulval, and then climbing on unclassified roads through Newmill and onto the wild moors with their ancient field systems and monuments, before joining the spectacular B3306 coast road at Gurnards Head. Follow this road, one of the finest coastal routes in the country to the former tin mining village of Pendeen before turning back inland along North Road past ruined mine engine houses. Climb over the moors again to join the A3071 turning in the Penzance direction. Watch out on a the steep downhill for the first turning on the right, the unclassified road to Sancreed. Follow this beautiful road to the tiny village of Sancreed, descending past the church to the Drift Reservoir and on to the junction with the busy A30, Penzance to Land's End road. Cross straight over the A30 onto the unclassified road. This takes you across country between flower-filled Cornish stone hedges as far as the B3315, turning left on this road for a few hundred metres, taking the first right through Paul village and down the steep hill into the picturesque fishing village of Mousehole. From here its an easy level run with sweeping views across Mounts Bay, through the port of Newlyn, joining the Penzance promenade and back to Penzance station.
