There is no dedicated parking in Westport (that we could identify) and so the what3words address takes you to a stretch of road where there is some space to pull off the road slightly onto a narrow grass verge. Please park thoughtfully.
This was a lovely circular walk over the Somerset Levels, following the old (now disused) Westport canal, the River Isle and the River Parrett before returning to Westport across the levels via some of the the droves. There’s a real sense of remoteness along many of the sections and we spotted lots of wildlife: a pair of cranes, herons, egrets, swans and several buzzards amongst others. We walked this one clockwise, timing our arrival at the Midelney pumping station for lunch; there’s a lone picnic table here!
Once you cross the Westport Canal at the start of this walk stay on that side of the waterway until you come to Midelney Bridge. The OS maps show the right of way crossing back and forth over the canal, but it doesn’t.
Enjoy the silence and the solitude.
