About trip
Starting from Falstone, this circular walk follows footpaths and bridleways across open fell and through some of the prettiest parts of Wark Forest. Some paths may be wet and muddy after rainfall. Be prepared for some steep sections. From the fine open views of the Tyne Valley with its farmsteads and crags to the shady, aromatic world of the coniferous forest this route presents stark contrasts. Grassy paths and soft woodland floors meander through some of the most mature parts of Kielder Forest planted as far back as 1926.
Roughside House, once a hill farm now a bothy or open shelter for walkers, is maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association. In summer the scenic Chirdon Valley, flanked by native broadleaved woodland, is also rich in wild flowers such as Marsh Thistles, Foxgloves, Tufted Vetch and Woundwort.
Look out for Buzzards ‘mewing’ overhead.
