About trip
The Merrick Trail path from Bruce's Stone Car Park will be closed between the car park and Culsharg from 18th August for approximately 1 month. This is due to tree felling operations. This is alternative route from the car park and the start is easily found just a few metres west of the actual Merrick Trail path. The start is nothing more than a grassy track, but as you ascend the Fell of Eschoncan you'll find a steep but rewarding path that once climbed provides fantastic panoramic views of Loch Trool and the nearby Galloway Hills. There is a quite distinct path as you head northwards to join a forest road. Head north east and follow this recently upgraded road until you rejoin the Merrick Trail a few hundred metres north of Culsharg Bothy and more importantly clear of the forest operations. Follow the path northwards up through the trees and onto Benyellary. There are many descent options off the Merrick, but you can of course return via this route.
