About trip

Time: 1 Hours Terrain: Easy. Description: St Aeldred, third Abbot of Rievaulx, thought of the abbey as a place of peace and serenity and somewhat to escape the tumult of the world, and if he came back today he would still echo those thoughts. Tucked away in a fold between wooded hills where Ryedale is joined by Nettle Dale, the soaring arches of the ruined windows stand out in majesty amid peaceful surroundings. This walk is short, but full of interest. The size of the abbey can be appreciated from the number of mounds and walls dotting the fields around, as well as the central ruins. Easy strolling through a meadow leads on to flowery woodland where the soft sound of wood pigeons sets the scene for views of the abbey and terrace.
