About trip

Time: 1.75 Hours Terrain: Easy. Description: The pressures of intensive farming and forest planting on the natural moorland are highlighted on this walk. A short and easy walk, but one which is marked by contrasts, be they the view of the deep Hole of Horcum or the sharp edge of mature forest on Blakey Rigg to the north east. Two ancient tracks are used and both keep to the edge of high escarpments. The purpose of these old ways was to take salt to the coast and preserved fish back inland. Saltergate Brow, between Gallows Dike, above the Hole of Horcum, and Whinny Nab, indicates its previous use but the name of Old Wife's Way is more elusive.
