North Wales - Aberdaron

We started this walk in Aberdaron where there is a large National Trust car park (£3 to park all day, free to National Trust members – remember your membership card). If that’s full there is more, private, field parking on the left as you enter Aberdaron on the B4413 from the north; that was also £3 to park. Alternatively, on the top of Mynydd Mawr, near the coastguard lookout and at the end of a narrow access track is another, small car park, if you just want the views!

From the car park (there are lots of places in Aberdaron for refreshments and also a small, well-stocked SPAR shop) we walked along the beach for a little while before following the path up the cliff and then following the coast path as it headed towards Mynydd y Gwyddel and Mynydd Mawr just beyond it. We walked this clockwise and the route is easy to follow; if the sea’s on your left you’re probably OK! There are a few steep sections, both up and down, on the way and a couple of sections could be very slippery in wet weather. The views from the path are lovely and when you get to the top of Mynydd Mawr you have almost 360 degree views (which, presumably, is why there’s an old coastguard lookout up here!) there are plenty of options for extending the walk, but we chose to follow the coastguard service road/track down to the minor road at Gwyddel, where there is a cafe. Our intended route took us on a short track from Tir Glyn to join up with the track along the valley to Porth Meudwy, but the right of way was suspended due to a landslip, and so we followed the diversion before continuing on our intended track to Porth Meudwy and then retracing our route along the coast to Aberdaron. This was a lovely walk.
