The what3words address takes you to a car park beside the A859 next to the Scaladale Centre. The walk goes from the corner of this car park climbing steadily uphill for the first half on a well-defined gravel path. It’s not a long walk, but the views are tremendous and we were heading for the observatory where we spent some time failing to spot eagles and successfully eating our lunch; not necessarily in that order. We chose this short walk on well drained paths because the previous few days had involved incessant rain and a force 10 gale. The wind was still strong enough at the top of this walk on an exposed viewpoint to blow you over.
Despite not seeing any raptors we enjoyed this walk for the tremendous views and landscape, and the sun broke through the drizzle and clouds towards the end to reward us for our effort.
PS: This walk is often called a ‘woodland walk’ but that is an aspirational description rather than factual. It’s heather and peat with clumps of planting for the future. Fingers crossed…
