We parked in the small car park for Langass Woods, just off the A867. After entering the woods through the gate we kept to the left and followed the Hebridean Way for just over half a mile before turning off this gravel path onto the track leading over Beinn Langais. This section is boggy and wellington boots or high ankle walking boots are a necessity if you want to keep your feet dry. Follow the waymarker posts. The views from the top of Beinn Langais are worth getting a bit damp!

From here the track descends to Barpa Langass Chambered Cairn which  is the best preserved Neolithic chambered cairn in the Outer Hebrides. It used to be possible to enter the cairn but the entrance collapsed and access is now forbidden.

From here the route continues to the car park on the main road then a short section along the A867 before turning towards the Langass Lodge Hotel on a minor access road. Past the hotel the route rejoins the Hebridean Way to loop back towards Langass Woods passing Sornach Coir Fhinn Stone Circle (Also known locally as Pobuill Fhinn). It’s actually an ellipse rather than a circle and stands on a levelled platform cut from the slope of Beinn Langass. There are great views across Loch Langais from here. Once back at Langass Woods we turned into the woods and paid a visit to the grave of ‘Hercules,’ a bear that became a local celebrity and international news in 1980 when he went on the run for three weeks whilst filming an advert on the island.

We really enjoyed this short, varied walk. The views are tremendous, There is much of interest and we spotted a Golden Eagle, Merlin and Hen Harrier at various points.
