About trip
Sepa Levels: Bogie @ Redcraig 0.384 passable but very slow.
0.50 to 0.60 probably nice levels. Would not recommend lower than 0.38 or in spate.
Slow with a few scrappy bits. Lines need to be selected carefully, as to avoid gravel banks, fastest flows often times into trees with limited manoeuvrability due to shallow water. A few more inches might open up some better lines but could also make strainers a bigger consideration. Not advisable in spate conditions due to overhanging branched (strainers) and sight bends, with limited choice of lines.
Above Mill of Gartly river is very narrow with lots of overhanging branches limiting lines to small gaps in the trees. River often no more than 6m across sometimes less. Afterwards it picks up a bit of volume on account of side burns running in but also less in the way of overhang.
Hazards:
NJ 51907 33151 (Just south of Mains of Kirkney) 90deg bend with tree blocking entire river. Lift over required. (Small gap for boat to float through)
NJ 52087 34517 (Millhill Farm) Tree blocking entire river. Lift over required. (Small gap for boat to float through)
NJ 51961 37763 - Weir Nice run-able tongue.
NJ 52351 38806 - Weir small avoid protruding rock.
NJ 52614 38916 - Weir run-able quite small
NJ 52828 39205 - Weir (Not run-able) on account of large sharp rocks at bottom of weir. Suggest lining.
