About trip
Distance: 5 Miles Time: 2.5 Hour Terrain: Easy Description: As well as its great castle Bamburgh enjoys a varied coastline of sweeping beeches, dunes and rocky shores. A few miles north of Bamburgh is Budel Bay, a vast expanse of mud flats, home to thousands of sea and land birds. This bay was an important port in the 13th Century but the harbor has long since disappeared beneath the sands and silt. The tidal sands now provide a home to wintering wildfowl and wading birds. Species such as graylag and pink-footed geese, mallard and wigeon migrate here in late summer from the Arctic to spend the winter months in this southern corner of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve.
