About trip
Distance: 3-7.5 Miles Time: Upto 4 Hours Terrain: Moderate Description: When Hadrian's Wall was completed, in AD163, it stretched 73 miles (117km), from the Solway Firth in the west to the Tyne estuary in the east. For most of the following two centuries, it was to be the northern boundary of the Roman Empire in Britain. The builders' search for the most easily defended route for their wall led them across the bleak land to the north of the River South Tyne, where they were able to utilise the outcrops of the Whin Sill, a recurring geological feature in Northumbria which produces a series of steep crags. Thus, the wall is not only a relic of great archeological interest, it is also scenically fascinating.
