About trip
Distance: 3.5 Miles Time: 1.75 Hour Terrain: Easy Description: Holy Island, or Lindisfame, is a small, square island; little more than a mile (1.5km) square, with one long, sandy promontory, the Snook, reaching out westwards towards the mainland. It is only an island for around half of each day; the rest of the time it is joined to the mainland by a road across a mile (1.5km) long causeway over the wide sands and mud-flats which are now incorporated into the Lindisfame National Nature Reserve. It is a place of unique beauty, and of enormous historical importance. Indeed, it holds a place in English religious history which parallels the importance of Iona in Scotland.
