About trip
Distance: 2 Miles Time: 1 Hour Terrain: Easy Description: Norham is a small village by the River Tweed, chiefly famous for its fine 12th century castle, built by the Bishop of Durham. Also of significance is the Ladykirk and Norham bridge, opened in 1864 to replace an earlier wooden structure connecting England to Scotland. Even before the wooden bridge, there was a great ford providing a place to cross the river. St Aidan crossed the border here on his way from lona to Lindisfarne in AD635 and for centuries after, it became one of the most important crossings on the Tweed. It was here that Edward I of England met the Scots nobility in 1292 to decide on the future king of Scotland.
