About trip
Distance: 4.5 Miles Time: 2.25 Hours Terrain: Easy Description: The little town of Wylam holds an unrivalled position in the history of the railways. The line between Wylam Colliery and the port of Lemington carried the early steam locomotive Puffing Billy, built in 1813 by the pioneer William Hedley; while, by coincidence, the greatest name in the early history of rail, George Stephenson- the designer of the Rocket- was born in a little cottage by the side of the line. This path follows the route of the old line and passes Stephenson’s birthplace.
