The weather was a bit grim – damp and foggy – and so we went for a short walk at the southern end of Berneray. The what3words address takes you to a small parking area near the end of the track from Borve. If you drive on a little further there is more parking closer to the beach, if you prefer.
It was all very quiet; the fog adding to the sensation of ‘other worldliness.’ We walked from the car parking area south east along a track. Soon the track turns sharp right, but there is a faint path that continues on to the southern edge of Loch Borve. We walked through harvested fields – if the crop was still in the ground it would be preferable to walk around it. We came down onto the sand at loch Borve and wandered a little (optional distraction!) before resuming our walk around the coast (anti-clockwise) and past the memorial to Angus MacAskill, the ‘Nova Scotia Giant,’ who was born here.
The path then curves around the headland (Rubha Bhoisnis) and we descended to the beach for a little way before turning eastwards through a cleft in the dunes and continuing along the track to our starting point.
The fog made this walk a very atmospheric experience but, without fog, the views would have been wonderful.
