About trip

  • Circular walk: 6.25 miles
  • what3words address for parking: there are a few pay and display car parks in Lampeter but otherwise street parking is very limited. The closest car park to the centre of Lampeter is probably the one beside Sainsbury's (///purse.yoga.nitrate).

This was a very pleasant walk on a sunny day in early Spring. The walk begins at the mini roundabout on the centre of Lampeter where there are a few very good cafes close by; we had a good lunch at 'Artisans' on the High Street.

We walked this anti-clockwise, passing the rugby club and climbing uphill through the community woodland. The route then skirts the south-eastern side of Olwen Wood and then Long Wood. There were lovely, far ranging views across the countryside on this section. You also pass two iron age hill forts: Castell Allt-goch and Castell Goetre.

When you get to the second hill fort the path the path meets another and you turn left towards the hillfort and skirts it before entering the wood and then joining up with the track on the wood's western side for the return to Lampeter. Part of the track is on logging tracks. The return journey is through the woodland, which made a nice contrast to the more open views on the outward leg.

Towards the southern end of Olwen Wood you rejoin the outward route just east of Castell Olwen - another hill fort - before descending the hill and returning to Lampeter.

We enjoyed this walk and the sunshine was most welcome. A few sections were very muddy, especially at field gates, and I suspect on a wet day it could be a bit claggy. If you are in Lampeter and are looking for a walk that's rewarding and not too difficult this might be a good choice. We actually walked this from the northern end of Long Wood into Lampeter and then back, but there is no safe parking at this end of the walk and we were staying close by.
