The what3words address takes you to a car park in Oddfellows Road: £6 to park all day and the machine accepts bank cards. Hathersage also has a railway station and so, if you are not staying locally, the train may be a better  option.

We walked this  route clockwise, leaving Hathersage by walking along the A187; it’s a slow climb and there’s a pavement. When you come to a row of houses on your left there’s a footpath sign between the buildings that leads onto a track running behind the houses. The track continues through the woods, still climbing. The good news is that once the path stops climbing it’s virtually all downhill from here!

The route passes Padley Chapel just before  you get to Grindleford, which is an interesting place to stop for a moment. Padley Chapel stands on the site of the former Padley Hall (or Padley Manor) and is a Grade 1 listed building. The chapel was originally the central gatehouse range of the Hall (little else survives) and was converted into a chapel in 1933  to honour the ‘Padley Martyrs.’

Past Grindleford a short walk beside the B6521 takes you down to the River Derwent and the return route follows the river back to Hathersage. This was a lovely walk with great views and plenty of variety.
