We started this walk from Chard where there are plenty of places to park; one roadside suggestion is above. Chard claims to be the birthplace of powered flight as it was here in 1848 that John Stringfellow first demonstrated that engine-powered flight was possible with his ‘aerial steam carriage.’ There’s an exhibition of his work in the small Chard Museum: it’s an interesting story.
You soon lose the town and sections of the walk make it feel it a lot more remote than it is. About half way round you come to the Cotley Inn at Wambrook which may be a good place to stop for something to eat. When we stopped there the local hunt was gathering outside the pub.
